Highlights & Experiences
Nature, culture, movement and insight – these highlights show what’s possible on a Sri Lanka journey beyond the expected.
Train ride through the hill country
The railway line from Kandy to Ella is one of the most scenic in Asia. It passes through misty forests, tea plantations and quiet mountain towns. Many travellers sit by the open door, letting the landscape drift by at a slow pace. You don’t have to ride the full route – shorter segments and stopovers in Nuwara Eliya or Haputale work just as well.
Safari in Yala or Wilpattu National Park
Wildlife isn’t the first thing people associate with Sri Lanka – which makes it all the more surprising. Yala is famous for leopards, elephants and crocodiles. Wilpattu is larger and quieter, with fewer vehicles. Both parks fit naturally into a round trip and offer a rich contrast to the coast or cultural heartlands.
Ancient cities and UNESCO heritage
In Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya, history is ever-present. These ancient cities reveal Sri Lanka’s Buddhist past through temples, ruins and centuries-old carvings. The climb up Sigiriya Rock is a highlight – not just for its paintings and fortress ruins, but for the views across the central plains. A must for those interested in culture and context.
Temples and city life in Kandy
Kandy is Sri Lanka’s spiritual centre, home to the Temple of the Tooth and daily rituals of drumming, incense and prayer. The city is lively, with markets, music and narrow streets worth exploring. You can also join a local family for a cooking class – a great way to connect with everyday life beyond the landmarks.
Relaxing on the southern coast
The south offers some of Sri Lanka’s most peaceful beaches – in places like Tangalle, Ahangama or Talalla. Small hotels and quiet coves make it ideal for unwinding after a round trip. This is where many travellers slow down: swimming, walking along the beach or taking time for a traditional Ayurveda treatment.
Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka can be visited year-round – but the best region depends on the season. The south and west coast are sunny and dry from December to April, perfect for beach holidays and classic round trips. The northeast is best between May and September, with calmer seas around Trincomalee. Travelling outside the main season often means fewer visitors and a different, quieter perspective on the island.
