The best time for a trip to France
Few countries offer as many different facets as France. It is thus difficult to define the ideal travel time. While the north is known for its mild winters but very rainy summers, the east, especially towards Switzerland, features impressively cold winters and lots of snow. The south and west, on the other hand, offer hot summer months and mild winters, though with sometimes significant rainfall.
It all depends on how you want to spend your vacation. Beach holiday and surfing, hiking, climbing, or would you prefer skiing and snowboarding? The general high season is in July and August, when schools are on break in France and the tourism industry thrives. September to May, on the other hand, can be considered the low season, unless of course one enjoys the autumn waves in the Atlantic or the steep ski slopes in the French Alps. The peak season for all winter sports enthusiasts is therefore from December to March. If you prefer a quieter approach and want to explore the hiking trails or climbing routes across the country, the warmer months like May/June or September/October are more suitable.
France - Beach holiday or city trip?
France – A country with many facets and a whole range of beautiful coastlines with bathing and surfing beaches as well as steep cliffs and hidden coves. The coastal area extends over 5,500 kilometers. Starting in Normandy, passing through Brittany along the Atlantic coast to the Basque Country, a well-known highlight is the Côte d’Azur all the way in the south of the country.
If one is drawn to the bustling city life and wants to be inspired by French culture, it doesn't always have to be Paris. Bordeaux, near the Atlantic coast, is now considered the most popular city in France, and cities like Toulouse, Nantes, Lyon, Biarritz, Marseille, Cannes, or Lille each have their own unique charm corresponding to their respective regions. Especially the smaller cities are wonderfully suited for a romantic city trip, where one can leisurely explore the city on foot or by bike. If you want to combine both, coastal cities like Bordeaux, Biarritz, or Marseille naturally offer perfect starting points for a beach visit.
Provence & Normandy
When thinking of Provence, one probably first envisions breathtaking lavender fields. However, the region is not only known for its bright violet but also for small old villages with unique old towns, the salt marshes of the Camargue, sunny mild climate, and cities like Nice, Arles, Avignon, and Marseille.
The probably most famous sight in Normandy is nothing less than a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Mont Saint Michel, a monastery mountain directly on its bay. In addition, Normandy attracts visitors with picturesque villages, streets as they were hundreds of years ago, and gothic churches that once inspired Claude Monet. But the region can also be different. With the port city of Le Havre, which was completely destroyed in World War II, this region of France lures with modern, futuristic architecture and an impressive port.
Southern France & Côte d’Azur
Southern France has a special charm and attracts sun worshippers from Europe and around the world every year to the popular holiday region. Beautiful beaches, Mediterranean architecture, a culinary pampering program, and endless sunny days – the French Riviera is diverse and stretches from Cassis through Menton to the Italian border. The Principality of Monaco, as well as famous cities like Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and Nice, are known for their exclusive flair. The Cannes Film Festival annually draws stars from around the world to the chic town. However, the region can also surprise: the inland, characterized by the Maritime Alps and the Massif des Maures, offers ample potential for hiking and mountain tours.
France’s Atlantic Coast
Starting in Brittany and the Pays de la Loire, spanning the entire Nouvelle Aquitaine region to the Basque Country at the Spanish border – France’s Atlantic coastline extends over 3000 kilometers across a large part of the country. The coast is particularly famous for its endless kilometers of beaches, popular conditions for water sports enthusiasts, and cities with a genuine holiday flair. Among surfers, this part of France is referred to as the Hawaii of Europe, which naturally attracts tourists. Campsites in the midst of pine forests, holiday apartments, and cozy hotels abound along the coast. Particularly well-known is the area between Hossegor and Biarritz. The coastal proximity of the wine capital Bordeaux is also practical if one wants to take a day trip to the surrounding area or if a winery has piqued their interest. The Basque Country around Biarritz boasts much culture, a quaint spirit of the times, and impressive landscapes.
Mountain holiday in France – The Auvergne-Rhônes-Alpes region
In the southeast of the country lies a paradise for every mountain and hiking enthusiast: the Auvergne-Rhônes-Alpes region. From volcanic mountains to icy peaks and river landscapes to the Ardèche, vineyards, and cities like Grenoble and Chambéry. The highest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc (4809 m), is the starting point of the Garonne, which later merges with the Rhône near Lyon. Activities such as hiking, cycling, climbing, and paddling can be wonderfully combined here. Likewise, gourmets will find plenty to delight in during their vacation in this area. Although France is generally known for its numerous cheese varieties, in the region one can particularly taste along the “Route des Fromages d’Auvergne,” essentially a travel route for cheese lovers. Cities like Lyon and Grenoble are rich in history and culture and provide insights into past times. The Roman theater in Lyon and the Bastille in Grenoble are well worth a visit.
