General information
Interesting facts about Costa Rica and its national parks
La Pura Vida in Costa Rica – A way of life
When traveling to Costa Rica, one quickly realizes what the motto of the Costa Ricans is: La Pura Vida! Whether young or old, for the inhabitants of Costa Rica, it is not just a phrase but a whole attitude toward life. But what exactly does La Pura Vida actually mean? Directly translated from Spanish to German, it means something like 'The pure and simple life.' The people of the country, also known as Ticos, use it in various situations, such as greeting or saying goodbye. It is based on the attitude of always focusing on the positive in life and appreciating and respecting life, the Earth, and all forms of the animal kingdom. Thus, La Pura Vida is definitely more than just a saying; it describes the lifestyle in Costa Rica.
Breathtaking nature
Costa Rica is known worldwide for its natural treasures and biodiversity because few countries take conservation and sustainability as seriously as Costa Rica. Characterized by national parks, reserves, conservation areas, volcanic landscapes, and forests, the country is an absolute must for any nature lover and outdoor fan. There are more than ten peaks in Costa Rica that exceed 3000 meters, and even active volcanoes that are integrated into the national parks, providing optimal conditions to explore the flora and fauna around. Waterfalls or hot springs can also be found, offering variety while trekking. Moreover, Costa Rica also has beaches in its program. In addition to black volcanic beaches, one can enjoy the Caribbean sun and sea on white sandy beaches under palm trees.
Discover the underwater world
Apart from the diverse flora and fauna on land, the underwater world in Costa Rica also has a lot to offer. Around 800 miles of coastline provide a paradise for snorkeling and diving to discover as many of the 7000 marine species as possible. The endless sandbanks and coral reefs, along with the crystal-clear water, boast optimal conditions. For complete beginners in the field, many hotels offer snorkeling courses, or one can book a course at one of the many dive schools right on the beach. Particularly sought after by all underwater fans in Costa Rica is the sea turtle. A total of five different species of turtle can be found there. The popular animals come to the beaches to lay their eggs, where they can be wonderfully observed. Also, the hatching of the baby turtles is an incredible natural spectacle and should be on your to-do list.
Costa Rica's volcanoes and cloud forests
In addition to white sandy beaches and palms, Costa Rica offers a completely different side, enticing visitors with various tours through the landscapes of numerous volcanoes. There are 60 volcanoes, some of which are already extinct, dormant, or still active. The most famous volcano is the Arenal in the northern part of the country. After frequent eruptions in the past, it is now in a dormant phase, but one can still see smoke rising from the crater during visits and discover solidified lava flows. Other well-known volcanoes include Poás, Rincón de la Vieja, and Irazu. Aside from the volcanic landscape, a large part of Costa Rica is covered by tropical rainforests, which are a popular destination for bird watchers, biologists, and eco-tourists. The forests have extremely high humidity and additional continuous rain, making the animal and plant life there so special. The most famous forest of its kind is the Monteverde, located in the northwest of the country, which can largely be explored via high hanging bridges. Many tourists come here due to the impressive biodiversity. But be careful: to protect the flora and fauna, a maximum of 160 people can be in the area at the same time.
Conservation and ecotourism in Costa Rica
Conservation is taken very seriously in Costa Rica, as the country is known for its established ecotourism, sustainability, and love for Mother Nature. Already a quarter of the country is under protection, which especially includes the plant and species diversity of the country. Many endemic species and the various ecosystems of the country make Costa Rica one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity on our planet. More than 200 species of mammals are included, including many species of bats, as well as wild cats, monkeys, or bears. The country’s conservation areas send a clear signal from the Ticos to protect the unique diversity and create sustainable tourism in the country. The most famous national parks are Tortuguero, Palo Verde, Monteverde, and Corcovado.
Best travel time
In principle, it can be said that Costa Rica can be traveled and explored all year round. However, it depends on the desired type of vacation, so monsoon seasons and temperature fluctuations should be considered. Because depending on the travel destination, different weather conditions prevail due to the topological and geographical location of the green tropical country. Thus, the climate can be divided into dry and rainy seasons. The dry season is from December to April, during the remaining time, one must expect relatively much rainfall. However, the intensity of the rain varies. On the Pacific coast, it rains only about half as much as on the Caribbean coast, and on the northwest coast, no precipitation is expected during the months of December to April, but many hours of sunshine. Both coasts have a high humidity year-round. Additionally, the hurricane season between July and October must be taken into account. Therefore, the months of January to April are recommended as the optimal travel time.
