General information
Interesting facts about Colombia
Bogotá
Bogotá is not only the capital of Colombia, but it is also considered the fastest-growing city in South America, combining past times with modernity. Additionally, it is a meeting point for people from all over the world, making the city a multicultural tourist magnet for all ages. Surrounded by the peaks of the Andes in the east of the city, Bogotá offers its approximately eight million residents a mix of many green spaces, modern buildings, antique treasures from the colonial era, museums, culinary experiences, and nightlife. The historic downtown La Candelaria is particularly well-known, as it serves as a cultural hub with several attractions, such as the Plaza de Bolívar, the historic heart of Bogotá.
Medellín
Once known as the most dangerous city in the world, Medellín has today acquired a new reputation. It is now known as 'the city of eternal spring', which is due to the consistently pleasant and mild temperatures. Although the city is in a tropical location, it is surrounded by the Aburrà Valley mountain basin at an altitude of about 1,500 meters in the Andes. After many modernization measures and expanded infrastructure, such as a metro and a cable car, Medellín has managed to become a popular tourist destination and is home to various organizations and banks. Medellín is not necessarily known for one specific attraction; rather, it is the unique flair and history of the city that has captivated many. Following in the footsteps of the former drug lord Pablo Escobar, the city tells many stories that can be discovered through street art and city tours.
Cartagena de Indias
Cartagena de Indias is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Colombia and is located in the north of the country on the Caribbean coast, with about one million inhabitants. The city is particularly famous for its well-preserved old town and the breathtaking beaches in the immediate vicinity. Impressive colonial buildings from the times of Spanish occupation stretch throughout the entire old town, the Centro Histórico. The neighborhoods El Centro and San Diego have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1984 and invite endless strolls through narrow, colorful streets lovingly adorned with flowers. If one wishes to escape the bustling life of the city to the sea, it is wonderful to relax with a coconut under palm trees on the Caribbean coast.
Coffee Triangle
Coffee is to Colombia what a good breakfast is to almost every German. What makes coffee cultivation in Colombia so special? The Coffee Triangle represents a large area not far from Bogotá, known for the special conditions of coffee cultivation. The relief at an altitude of 2,220 meters above sea level, suitable light and temperature conditions as well as regular rainfall provide optimal growing opportunities. The Coffee Triangle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 due to its fascinating surroundings and attracts tourists with a picturesque spectacle to the plantations and surrounding villages. Armenia is considered the capital of coffee, from where the Coffee Triangle can be optimally explored via country roads.
Best travel time
In general, Colombia can be visited year-round, as the seasons are only divided into summer and winter, that is, dry and rainy seasons. The best months for a holiday in Colombia are July to August and December to March. During these months, the likelihood of precipitation is at its lowest and one can expect many warm sunny hours. However, the climate, as often, depends on the respective region. Weather conditions can change depending on the area, which one should be prepared for. The months from December to March are particularly suitable for the Caribbean coast, and October should be avoided due to heavy rain. Nevertheless, Colombia is large and diverse, so a suitable travel destination can also be found for the off-season.
Safety in Colombia
It is certainly no secret that Colombia does not have the best reputation as a travel destination in terms of safety. The country has long been associated with violent crime and drug trafficking, and the stories surrounding Pablo Escobar have likely strengthened this reputation. However, the people want to leave this reputation behind, and considerable efforts have been made in the country to enable tourists to explore Colombia safely. Crime rates have been steadily declining for years. However, there are certain rules to follow in order to avoid unpleasant situations, such as being cautious at night and in unfamiliar neighborhoods and 'Don’t show your Papaya', which means 'Don’t show what you have'. If one listens to the locals and stays alert, one can wonderfully explore Colombia on their own.
