General information about Vietnam
We have compiled the most interesting information for your desired travel destination.
The original North
In the north, Vietnam borders China and Laos and is primarily characterized by impressive mountain landscapes. This makes the region both geographically and climatically different from the tropical and more humid south. The mountainous area around Sapa is a popular destination for multi-day hikes with its picturesque terrace fields and traditional villages. The Ha Giang Loop is more action-packed: The popular motorcycle route leads over small, winding roads through the mystical mountain landscape at the border with China. The highest mountain in the country, Phan Xi Pang (3144 meters), is also located in the mountainous north. Towards the coast, the mountain landscape gradually flattens out and ultimately merges into the famous Ha Long Bay.
Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay in northeastern Vietnam is rightly considered one of the most famous and popular destinations in the country. The mystical landscape is characterized by spectacular limestone formations that rise several hundred meters from the turquoise sea. For this unique geology, the bay has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site twice. The region is best explored from the water: Discover dream islands, hidden beaches, and unique underwater worlds on a boat tour. The extensive cave system is also definitely worth a visit. For nature lovers, those seeking relaxation, and water sports enthusiasts, Ha Long Bay is an exceptional travel destination.
The capital Hanoi
The capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, is also located in the north of the country. The history of the city dates back to 1010 and is influenced by Chinese conquerors and colonial powers from the Netherlands and France. The vibrant Old Town invites exploration with its historic buildings, narrow streets, and countless shopping and dining options. Notable attractions include the Temple of Literature, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tran Quoc Pagoda, and Train Street.
Central Vietnam: Beaches, Temples, and Historic Cities
Central Vietnam presents itself as a narrow coastal strip between Laos and the South China Sea. Nevertheless, this versatile region has much to offer both culturally and geographically. While the coast invites sunbathing and snorkeling on beautiful beaches, the interior surprises with diverse primeval forests, roaring waterfalls, and impressive cave systems. Culturally, the region boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the beautiful port city of Hoi An, the former imperial city of Hue, and the My Son ruins. The modern metropolis of Da Nang, known for its beautiful beaches attracting tourists from China and Russia, offers a contrasting program.
South Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City and Floating Markets
The south of Vietnam is primarily characterized by the Mekong Delta and the city of Ho Chi Minh, formerly Saigon. The largest city in the country is also the main trading center of Vietnam and is less touristy than, for example, Hanoi. Here you will find the authentic bustle of a modern Asian metropolis. In addition to local markets, historic buildings, and pagodas, numerous attractions await you, such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the City Theatre, the Historical Museum, or the An Quang Pagoda. The Mekong River Delta is best explored by boat. Among the many small islands and villages, the traditional floating markets are a special attraction. Here you can purchase handicrafts and fresh fruits and vegetables from a small, traditional wooden boat. South Vietnam also offers plenty for a beach holiday: Along the coast of the South China Sea, fine sandy beaches await you with numerous opportunities for water sports.
Special highlights and attractions
Whether bustling metropolises or untouched nature – Vietnam is a particularly versatile travel destination both geographically and culturally. Experience the vibrant cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, discover the historic cities of Hue and Hoi An, and relax on the dream beaches of the roughly 3,000-kilometer-long coastline. Among the special natural highlights are the Mekong Delta with its winding waterways and small islands as well as the impressive Ban Gioc-Detian waterfalls near the Chinese border. Culturally, the countless pagodas and temples are particularly fascinating. Among the oldest sacred buildings on the continent is the My Son temple complex in Central Vietnam. The complex, consisting of around 70 temples, dates back to the 3rd century and is dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. Of course, a highlight of any trip to Vietnam is also the Vietnamese cuisine – try the delicious national dishes or learn how to prepare the specialties yourself in a cooking class.
Climate and best travel time
With consistently warm temperatures, Vietnam is generally a year-round travel destination. However, depending on the season and region, heavy rainfall can occur. Generally, the chances of good travel weather are best between October and April. Nevertheless, sudden and heavy rain showers can occur, which quickly give way to sunshine. The country is divided into three climate zones, with tropical to tropical seasonal climate:
Northern Vietnam has an average of 17 degrees in December and January, which is cooler in winter but usually dry, while the summer months can become very hot and rainy.
Central Vietnam is characterized by hot, dry weather from mid-January to the end of August, while high rainfall can be expected during the winter months, especially in October and November.
In the south, three seasons are distinguished: From November to January, it is pleasantly warm and dry with daytime temperatures of 28-30 degrees; from February to May it remains dry, but temperatures rise above 35 degrees, and from June to October, very hot and humid rainy season prevails.
