Why do I keep returning to Greece?
Greece, that remains: A journey full of memories and feelings
Greece, that remains: A journey full of memories and feelings
My friends often ask me: "Why do you return to Greece?"
Is it because you grew up there? Because of the food, the culture, or the beaches?
The truth is: Yes — because of all that.
But to be honest, the reason is a bit deeper. It’s the feeling I have there. A warm feeling that invites you to stay, that makes every moment special and every encounter familiar.
In Greece, I feel welcome everywhere. In the smiles of the people, in the small everyday moments, in the spontaneous conversation with a stranger. It’s this simplicity and human closeness that makes the difference.
Every place in Greece has something unique to offer.
In Athens, for example, I feel like I'm always traveling to the past while I am in the present. At every corner a story from antiquity emerges. As a child, I wished to randomly meet Pericles or Socrates and discuss for hours under the shadow of the Acropolis. Every time I stroll along the ruins of the ancient city, I feel this 'encounter' in a different way — a dialogue through time where their work continues to speak to us.
Thessaloniki & Chalkidiki: Enjoyment and Serenity
Thessaloniki, the second largest city in the country, is for me the capital of Greek cuisine. The Mediterranean flavors and aromas from traditional tavernas and upscale restaurants are incomparable! The architecture, with Byzantine and Roman monuments among modern buildings, gives the city its unique character. I especially love the walks along the Thermaic Gulf when sitting on a bench watching the sunset over the sea. Then you feel the motto of the city's residents: relaxed, calm, as if time stands still.
A bit outside lies Chalkidiki, a true paradise. The crystal-clear water, sandy beaches, and pines create a magical scenery. What I particularly like is that Chalkidiki can offer everything — from vibrant nightlife to absolute tranquility. And the warm water makes the first jump into the sea even more pleasant for me.
Corfu: Mediterranean lightness between Greece and Italy
Corfu is one of my favorite islands — perhaps even the favorite! A place that makes you doubt whether you are in Greece or Italy, as history and architecture unite elements of both countries. The picturesque alleys, golden beaches, green mountains, and azure blue water make the island one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. The locals are hospitable, and I never miss the chance to buy a Venetian ice cream and stroll through the alleys of the town.
Ioannina: Between nature, memories, and year-round diversity
Of course, Greece is not just summer and sea. Ioannina can be the perfect base for a comprehensive experience in every season. Ioannina holds a special place for me, as I have spent some of the happiest years of my life there. At the same time, the city is a destination that offers experiences all year round: walks by the lake, tsipouradika with incredible taste experiences, and the opportunity to explore nearby regions like Zagorochoria or the Vikos Gorge. Those who love nature or are looking for activities will find numerous options for hiking, extreme sports, or nearby beaches to swim.
All of this answers the question of why I return to Greece. Every time I walk through the streets, enjoy every bite of authentic food, or look out at the sea, I understand why this place will always hold a special place in my heart.
And maybe now is the moment for you to discover this magic too.
