Arrival in the kingdom
Even landing in Paro is spectacular: The plane glides closely by mountain slopes before you touch down in the middle of the Himalayas. Your private guide greets you at the airport and accompanies you on the scenic drive to Thimphu. First glimpses of the kingdom await you at Buddha Point, where a giant statue watches over the valley. The next day, you will discover the capital with its monasteries, prayer wheels, and the Memorial Chorten – a place of reflection and memory of Bhutan's third king.
The Valley of Happiness
Your route continues over the Dochu-La Pass to Punakha. At over 3,000 meters, a broad view of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas opens up in clear weather. Along the way, you will visit the fertility temple Chimi Lhakhang, whose history is as unusual as it is fascinating. In Punakha itself, the imposing Punakha Dzong awaits you – one of the most beautiful monastery fortresses in the country, picturesque at the confluence of two rivers. Enjoy the mild atmosphere of the valley and immerse yourself in the spiritual heart of Bhutan.
Peace in the Phobjikha Valley
Next, head to the remote Phobjikha Valley – a wide, quiet glacial valley that hosts the rare black-necked cranes from Tibet in winter. The region around Gangtey is known for its pristine nature and the monastery of the same name that dominates the valley. Take your time for the Gangtey Nature Trail, a gentle hike with wide views, or listen to the morning or evening prayers of the monks. The Gangtey Lodge will be your retreat – overlooking a valley that many consider one of the most beautiful in Bhutan.
Spiritual heritage and quiet valleys
Over winding mountain roads and another pass, you will reach Bumthang – a remote region regarded as the spiritual center of Bhutan. Along the way, visit the Trongsa Dzong, impressively located on a mountain ridge. In Bumthang itself, expect fertile fields, small villages, and venerable monasteries. Visit the temple Kurje Lhakhang, which is closely linked to the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan, and explore the old town of Chhume or Jakar. The Amankora Bumthang offers a place of tranquility – perfect for pausing.
Highlight at the sacred rock
Back in Paro, you will experience the final leg of your Bhutan journey. The place is charming, the atmosphere calm – and above it all, the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery looms. On the penultimate day, you set out early for the hike: the ascent and descent takes about five hours. The monastery itself spectacularly clings to a rock wall, around 900 meters above the valley. Every Bhutanese is said to have visited it once in their life – and for travelers, this moment is deeply moving. A fitting conclusion to your journey through the land of the Thunder Dragon.
Farewell – A last look at the Himalayas
Today it is time to say goodbye to Bhutan. Your guide will take you back to the airport in Paro. Perhaps you will catch a last glimpse of the white peaks on the horizon while departing – memories of a journey full of quietude, depth, and encounters. What remains is the feeling of having been very close to a special place. Safe travels home!
