Amazonas Expedition Peru

On the Water Through the Green Heart of the Amazon

On the Water Through the Green Heart of the Amazon

Deep in northern Peru begins a journey like no other: a river expedition through the largest contiguous rainforest area on earth. Along the Marañón, Ucayali, and through the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, you will experience the authenticity of the Amazon. This four-day expedition combines intense nature experiences with deep relaxation – between birdwatching at dawn, piranha fishing in the afternoon, and exchanges with village communities that live in and with nature. Each day brings new encounters – and takes you deeper into the green heart of South America.

Your Home on the Water: The Aria Amazon

The Aria Amazon is an elegant, thoughtfully designed riverboat with only 16 suites and floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows – built for those who want to experience nature without sacrificing comfort. Designed by the renowned architect Jordi Puig, the ship combines modern design with the highest ecological responsibility – thanks to its own water treatment plant and low-emission propulsion.

Relax between excursions in the whirlpool on the sun deck, indulge in the spa, or enjoy the tranquility in the lounge with a view of the jungle. Culinary delights await you as Peruvian top chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino guides you through the flavors of the Amazon – directly from the rainforest to your plate.

Arrival in Iquitos - the Adventure Begins

Upon your arrival at Iquitos airport, you will be warmly welcomed and start with an initial glimpse into the vibrant culture of this rainforest metropolis. During a short city stroll and a welcome lunch, you will already feel the tropical energy that flows through this region.

Afterwards, you will continue to the port of Nauta, where you will board the Aria Amazon. As you settle into your suite and the river slowly begins to flow beneath you, you will sense: The adventure has begun. In the evening, you will enjoy the first dinner on board – a culinary introduction to the flavors of the Amazon.

02 Yanayacu Pucate River

Marañón & Yanayacu Pucate River

Early in the morning, you will set out for birdwatching along the Marañón. As the jungle slowly awakens, you may see parrots, herons, and with a bit of luck a sloth in the treetops. After breakfast, you will continue with the skiff into the quiet, black waters of the Yanayacu Pucate River – home to Taricaya turtles, howler monkeys, and countless bird species.

In the afternoon, you will visit a local village and experience a demonstration of traditional aguaje harvesting. After that, you can try your luck at piranha fishing – a surprisingly quiet but thrilling experience. After dinner, you will venture out again by boat: In the darkness, the Amazon reveals its mysterious side – with glowing eyes, silent movements, and the calls of the night.

03 Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Samiria River & Pacaya Samiria Reserve

Today, your expedition leads deep into the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse protected areas in South America. In the morning, you will travel along the mysterious Samiria River and, with a bit of luck, see monkeys, toucans, or freshwater dolphins. Under shade-giving trees, a picnic awaits you outdoors – accompanied by the multi-voiced concert of the jungle.

The afternoon is dedicated to water: you can choose between a canoe tour, a jungle hike, or a refreshing swim in the river. Whether by kayak or on foot – here the rainforest shows its full power. Later, you will leisurely cruise along the Ucayali River as the sky turns orange. A sunset like only the Amazon can provide.

04 Puerto Prado Forest

Puerto Prado & Amazon River

After breakfast, you will glide once more on the Marañón River with the skiff – don’t forget your binoculars! Sloths, kingfishers, and parrots are particularly active in the early hours. The silence on the water makes every rustle in the foliage and every movement in the water feel much more intense.

In the afternoon, you will reach the indigenous village of Puerto Prado. In addition to meeting the locals, you will also discover a botanical wonder: the giant Amazonian water lilies, whose leaves can reach over a meter in diameter. Later, you will return on board and reflect on the day's impressions during a relaxed evening on the river.

Market Visit & Manatee Rescue Center

On the last morning, you will visit a local market – a feast for the senses. Among colorful fruits, medicinal plants, and spices, you will receive an authentic insight into the everyday life of the Amazon region. After that, you will return one last time for breakfast on board the Aria Amazon before saying goodbye.

On the way to the airport, you will also stop at the Manatee Rescue Center. Here, you will learn about the work of the caretakers who nurse orphaned manatees back to health and prepare them for their return to the wild. A quiet, touching conclusion to a journey that leaves far more than just memories.
