NIHI Sumba
Even the journey to NIHI Sumba makes it clear that Sumba has little in common with the more famous islands of Indonesia. Instead of densely populated places and beach clubs, the island is characterized by wide hills, empty beaches, small villages, and a landscape that still appears largely untouched. The resort is secluded along a long coastline in the west of Sumba and consciously integrates into this environment without overshadowing the island's naturalness. During a stay, it's less about classic luxury and more about the feeling of living very close to nature and the rhythm of the island for a few days. It is this blend of wilderness, tranquility, and respectful interaction with the surroundings that makes NIHI Sumba one of the most extraordinary travel destinations in Southeast Asia.

Culinary
The restaurants at NIHI Sumba are strongly oriented towards the island itself and work with many regional ingredients from their own agriculture or from local producers. Fresh fish, tropical fruits, and Indonesian-inspired dishes are just as prominent as light international cuisine. Meals are often enjoyed with a view of the ocean or directly on the beach, maintaining a consciously relaxed atmosphere. Instead of large restaurant concepts, many aspects feel personal, calm, and closely connected to the surroundings.
Activities
On Sumba, a large part of the experience takes place outside the villa. Guests explore remote waterfalls, traditional villages, wide savanna landscapes, and almost deserted beaches, often accompanied by local guides from the island. NIHI is also known for its location at the famous Occy’s Left wave, which is considered one of the best surf spots in Indonesia. At the same time, horseback riding along the coast, snorkeling, spa safaris, and insights into local projects of the Sumba Foundation are central to many stays. The protection of nature and support for the local community are visibly part of the resort's concept and not just an additional thought.
Villas
The only 27 villas at NIHI Sumba are spread out along the coastline and are intentionally designed to be open, allowing wind, light, and the landscape to be part of the stay. Thatched roofs, natural stone, wood, and handcrafted elements from Sumba create a living atmosphere that feels luxurious while being deeply rooted in the island. Many villas feature private pools overlooking the ocean, spacious outdoor areas, and direct access to the nature surrounding the resort. Despite the exclusivity, the atmosphere remains pleasantly unpretentious and far from the typical luxury resort character.
Location
NIHI Sumba is located on the remote west coast of Sumba, an island east of Bali that has remained significantly more unspoiled touristically to this day. The journey usually occurs via Bali with a subsequent domestic flight to Tambolaka, from where the resort is reached after about a 90-minute drive through small villages and hilly landscapes. It is this seclusion that makes the stay so special, as many regions of the island appear barely developed. Upon arrival, one experiences Indonesia in a significantly quieter, more natural, and authentic way than at many more famous places in the country.
