Echo Base
The idea for Echo Base arose in a conversation with astronaut Buzz Aldrin during his visit to Antarctica. Accordingly, the most modern camp from White Desert presents itself futuristically: Clear lines and shiny surfaces stand in quiet seclusion on a shimmering glacier of the ice sheet, surrounded by nunataks that rise like ancient guardians from the white expanse. Floor-to-ceiling windows blur the boundary between earth and cosmos, and yet you will find warm comfort inside. Echo Base is ideal for guests who appreciate modern design and extraordinary architecture and want to feel like they are on another planet for a few days.

Tents
Six heated double pods for a maximum of twelve guests form the heart of the camp, optionally with twin or king-size beds. Floor-to-ceiling windows made of single-use glass provide a view of the continent, while the interior belongs entirely to you. Each pod has its own bathroom with private shower and toilet, heating blankets and hot water bottles, a coffee machine, and a desk. The camp can also be booked exclusively for families or small groups.
Culinary
The chefs at Echo Base use fresh ingredients that are flown in weekly and combine them with wines that suit this special environment. At the bar, whose centerpiece is a sculpture by artist Anthony James, you can end the day with cocktails while the midnight sun wanders over the glacier. After returning from the South Pole, a festive three-course menu featuring champagne awaits you, honoring your expedition.
Activities
Echo Base is the starting point for guided expeditions across the glacier and to the surrounding nunataks. Ice climbing, abseiling, fat bike tours, cross-country skiing, visiting ice caves, or a zipline ride bring you closer to Antarctica in very different ways. In November, you will experience the freshly hatched emperor penguin chicks at Atka Bay and the blue ice tunnels from here. For relaxation, a sauna with an ice bath, massages, as well as yoga and meditation in the dome are all included in the travel price. A professional photographer will capture your stay, and you will receive the pictures at the end of your trip.
Location
Echo Base is located directly on the Antarctic ice sheet in Queen Maud Land, at about 71° 32' South. From here, flights to the emperor penguin colony at Atka Bay and expeditions to the South Pole begin.
Travel from Cape Town: All journeys from White Desert start and end in Cape Town. A direct flight takes you in about five and a half hours over the Southern Ocean and the pack ice to the blue ice runway of Wolf's Fang, from where you will continue your journey to Echo Base. Since the weather dictates flight times, we recommend arriving in Cape Town at least two days before departure.
